Can’t See Without Your Glasses? 1 Tip to Make Shopping for Glasses Easy

July 9, 2014 by Nancy Goldblatt Leave a Comment

Can you see without your glasses?

Are you blind as a bat without your glasses? How can you see how new frames look without your glasses?

Are you blind as a bat without your glasses?
How can you see how new frames look without your glasses?

My client Marcia couldn’t.

I went eyeglass shopping with her to help her choose a flattering new frame.

While I was picking out frames for her, she was trying on glasses.

I turned to Marcia to show her the frames I picked out for her and was surprised by what I saw her doing.

Marcia was putting the frames she was interested in on top of her own glasses.

She did this out of desperation.

Because she could not tell how she looked when she took her old glasses off.

Have you ever been that desperate?

This was a creative solution, but it did not work.

With the two frames layered on top of each other, it was impossible to tell how the new frames looked.

A Better Solution

Even if you can see well enough without your glasses, it’s a challenge to pick out flattering frames.

Here is one simple thing you can do that will make eyeglass  and sun-glass shopping really easy.

When you go shopping for new glasses, bring a digital camera or use your camera phone.

Ask the sales person to take pictures of you wearing the frames you are interested in.

Take the pictures home and download them onto your computer or onto a tablet.  You can also print them out and put the pictures side by side to make it easy to compare how you look in the different frames.

Even if you are not extremely near sighted this is a good idea.

And now comes the best part.

By looking at a photo, rather than looking in a mirror, it’s like looking at someone else and you can be more objective. When you are more objective, it’s  so much easier to see which eye-glass frame looks the best.

Nothing to Wear Panic When You Are Getting Ready to Go Out

March 31, 2014 by Nancy Goldblatt Leave a Comment

What happens when you get invited to a special event?

After you get all “dolled up,” do you look in the mirror and realize you look awful?

  • Does your outfit cling to your body revealing every bulge?

  • Do you look tired, old or washed out?

  • Maybe you don’t know what’s wrong.

But you feel, you look bad.

If you leave your home looking like this, everyone will think,

“That poor woman, is over the hill.”

Will they

        Feel sorry for you…

        Talk about you…

                  or

         Avoid you…

You say to yourself…

“I must find something else to wear.”

  • You go to your closet and begin desperately searching.

  • Before you know it, you have pulled out more than half the clothes in your closet.

  • Clothes are piled everywhere and now you are running late.

  • Still you haven’t found the right outfit to wear.

Your heart starts beating faster and you are perspiring profusely as your panic builds.

  • If you have straight hair it’s hanging limp and wet.

  • If you have curly hair, it has frizzed up into a wild mass, from perspiration.

Your carefully made up face, is now red and blotchy and your makeup has melted away.

You are a wild woman, as you vainly pull more and more pieces of clothing out of your closet and drawers.

The friend waiting for you outside in the car has begun to impatiently honk the horn.

Or the phone is ringing and the hostess is asking,

“What’s going on, why aren’t you here yet?”

You are in fight or flight mode and can’t talk.

You think to yourself,

”I  must find something to wear fast.”

Do you put on that original outfit again and force yourself to leave the house?

Will you hide in a corner, hoping others don’t notice that you are looking fat or frumpy?

Because this has happened before, you know you will be miserable, if you don’t find something to wear that makes you look and feel good.

Do you give up in disgust and call the hostess and say,

  “I’m too sick to attend.”

Now you really do feel sick, as your heart beats faster, panic is racing through your body and you can’t stop perspiring.

Maybe your problem isn’t a special event

Maybe it’s facing your closet everyday.

Do you dread trying to find something to wear to work?

Because

  • You have gained weight.

  • Your shape has changed.

  • Your “old faithfuls,” are threadbare.

  • Or you have a closet stuffed with separates but nothing matches.

Is there something you can do to avoid all of this?

You can call in sick, and hide out while you exercise like crazy, lose a few pounds and then spend lots of money on new clothes.

Even with exercise, weight loss, and new clothes, you will face the same problem, if you don’t learn what colors and styles really flatter you.

You can’t depend on the fashion industry for accurate information on how to choose flattering clothes and accessories.

They are not in the business of teaching you how to understand your unique style.

They want to sell you the latest clothes and accessories.

There is a solution

You can learn to be your own Personal Image Consultant.

Imagine…

  • Having a closet full of mix and match clothes that all look great on you.

Imagine…

  • Going shopping and knowing what to buy and what to avoid.

This won’t take thousands of dollars or years to do.

You don’t even have to wait till you lose weight to start looking and feeling better.

And you don’t have to buy a whole new wardrobe of clothes.

You can learn to shop your closet and use what you already have.

Are you ready to learn to be your own “Image Consultant,” and say goodbye to the panic of “Nothing to Wear”?

Comfortable Clothes that Breathe from Baltimore’s New Store, “The Joshua Tree”

November 19, 2013 by Nancy Goldblatt Leave a Comment

Did you know most of the clothing you wear is made of fabric grown with lots of pesticides?

Trying to live a healthy life?
Trying to live a healthy life?

How much of these pesticides are being absorbed into your skin?

One of the few plants that does not need protection from pesticides is hemp.

It’s possible to purchase 100 % hemp clothing.

Because hemp clothing breathes, it’s extremely comfortable.

In Baltimore, Maryland, you can find hemp clothing and other clothing made with comfortable sustainable fabric at “The Joshua Tree.”

“The Joshua Tree has been in business 16 months.  It’s located in Baltimore’s Mt. Washington neighborhood near Whole Foods.

I discovered “The Joshua Tree,” one day after I finished shopping at Whole Foods on Smith Avenue.  I had previously seen a big sign that said, ” Eco Friendly Clothing””.

Joshua Tree Sign

One day when I was not in a hurry, I decided to follow the sign.   I discovered a store full of  clothes and accessories grown sustainably.

This store carries hemp, soy and organic men’s and women’s casual clothes. The styles are forward-thinking, inexpensive to up-scale and also sewn “sweatshop-free.” You will also find locally made scrubs, soaps and aromatherapy oils.

I bought a pair of ecoSkin leggings that are so soft and comfortable, I can barely tell I am wearing pants

You Don’t Have to Wait Until You Lose Weight, You Can Look Amazing Now

May 9, 2013 by Nancy Goldblatt Leave a Comment

What’s keeping you from looking your best right now?  If you are a woman, you will probably say.“My weight,” or a particular body part thats too big, like your stomach.

So You Think You Have to Lose Weight Before Hiring An Image Consultant

Many of the women who contact me say they have to lose weight before they can use my services.  They assume that when they hire an image consultant, they will have to  throw out their entire closet and buy a whole new wardrobe because they have seen this happen on television shows like “What Not to Wear.”

When I work with a client my goal is to help a woman make the most of her existing wardrobe.  That means teaching her what colors and styles are most flattering and teaching her how to shop her closet using a chart of her best colors and line drawings of flattering clothing for her face and body.

This is information that can be used for a lifetime no matter what the fashion trends are

Stop putting your life on hold while you are trying to lose weight. You can look beautiful while you work on your weight.

Healthy Lips, How to Protect and Flatter those Big or Small Lips You Inherited

January 10, 2013 by Nancy Goldblatt Leave a Comment

I inherited big lips from my paternal grandmother’s side of the family.  What size lips did you  inherit?

Nancy, age 13 with her big lips

When I was growing up, thin (sophisticated lips) were in style.  I had many conversations with my younger sister, Suzi, who also inherited those big lips.

Suzi and I came up with a plan.  When we grew up, we would get lip surgery to make our lips thinner.

We did not know lips naturally lose volume as we age.

I am now grateful for my big lips.  They aren’t as full as they once were, but I no longer feel they are too big.

Whatever the size of your lips, the skin on your lips is quite thin and vulnerable to sun, heat, wind and cold damage.   In addition, if don’t drink enough water, drink carbonated drinks, or take medication that is dehydrating, your lips can end up looking dry and wrinkled.

Think of your lips as a barometer of your stomachs health.  When they are dried out it mean your stomach does not have enough hydration.

How can you care for your lips, so they stay beautiful besides drinking lots of water and avoiding caffeine?

Here is a link to “Sun Protection Tips to Help Prevent Skin Cancer,” from Dr. Brandith Irwin, Cosmetic Dermatologist.  These Tips can apply to our lips as well as our skin

http://madisonskin.com/skin-cancer/sun-protection-tips.html

Whether you have big or little lips, the right shade of lipstick or colored lip gloss with a spf sunscreen rating can not only protect your lips but help you to look healthy and vibrant.

Just because a lipstick color is being promoted by the fashion industry,  does not mean it will be flattering to you.

How can you find out which lipstick colors really flatter your unique coloring?

Choose a lipstick a shade or two darker than the inside of your lower lip.

To discover additional flattering lipstick shades get a  Color 1, Smart Chart done.  Besides 40 to 50 of your best clothing and makeup colors, a Color 1, Smart Chart will contain at least 3 of your best lipstick colors and as many as 12 of your best lipstick shades.

You can get a Color 1, Smart Chart from the Wardrobe Wizard, Nancy Goldblatt.  Nancy is now able to do virtual color analysis on-line.

If you live in Baltimore, Maryland, or surrounding areas she can work with you in person.  If you live other places, she can work with you on-line using digital pictures.

How to Pick The Perfect Eyeglass Frame, Using Your Smartphone Or Digital Camera

December 26, 2012 by Nancy Goldblatt Leave a Comment

Have you been squinting at your computer monitor or your smart phone?

Do words or numbers look fuzzy, even when you enlarge the font on your screen?

Trouble seeing, need glasses?
Trouble seeing, need glasses?

In the last year I have noticed both of these things happening to me.  I tried to deny I needed prescription glasses by buying drugstore, non-prescription reading glasses.

I noticed even with drugstore reading glasses, I was still straining to see small print & numbers.

Which of the following excuses have you been using to postpone attending to your eyes?

I don’t have time to get my eyes examined.

New glasses are too expensive.

Glasses will make me look old.

I’m blind as a bat and can’t see well enough to tell  how a new frame looks.

1.  So busy, I could have gone blind

When I was 34 years old, my eyes were aching.  When I complained to a retired, physician friend of mine how often my eyes were hurting, he insisted I go see an eye doctor.

At first, because I was busy, I ignored him.

Fortunately for me, my pain persisted and this motivated me to visit an eye doctor.

I was diagnosed with glaucoma, a disease of high eye pressure that can cause blindness if it’s not diagnosed and treated.

Glaucoma is usually painless and it’s more common in people over the age of 40.

I am grateful that I had eye pain, that forced me to get my eyes checked, because untreated, Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness.

Fortunately, my glaucoma was treated, before I lost any of my vision.

Over the years, I continued to have my eye pressure monitored. If a member of your immediate family has Glaucoma, you are more likely to develop it.

You should be getting an eye examination every year or two, especially as you get older, to prevent progression of Glaucoma and a number of other eye diseases.

2.  Glasses are too expensive

Prescription glasses usually cost between $150 to $400, and if you need bifocals or progressive lenses, your glasses can cost between $300 and $700 or more — not counting the cost of an eye exam.

If you get all the extras and have a strong prescription, glasses could easily cost you over $700 or $800 every 2 or 3 years.  If you need a spare pair of glasses, it can cost even more.

Save 50% or more:

Save 50% or more by purchasing glasses or contact lenses at Costco or Wal-Mart or even more if you buy glasses from an on-line site.

(Consumer Reports gave Costco eye-glass department high ratings for service, quality and price)

(Keep reading to discover more about choosing and buying glasses on-line.)

 3.  Glasses will make me look old

Yes, glasses that are too large or have an unflattering shape can make you look older.

However, wearing glasses that are the right color, shape and size can actually help you look current.

As we get older, our eyes lose their defined shape.  Putting on flattering eyeglasses is like putting eyeliner on, giving your eyes back their definition and helping you look more alert and alive.

 4. Blind as a bat, without glasses

One of my”Personal Image,” clients, Marcia, could not see well enough without her glasses to choose a new frame.

So she came up with a creative solution.

She put the new frames on and then put her old glasses on top of these, so she could see how the frames looked.

Unfortunately, the layered glasses made it impossible to tell how the new frames looked.

Two Easy Ways to Choose Flattering Frames, Even If You Are Almost Blind Without Your Glasses

While searching for a solution to Marcia’s problem, I discovered two easy ways to choose flattering eyeglass frames.

  1.  Have the salesperson take pictures of you in different frames with  your  digital camera or smart phone.  Some brick and mortar stores have computers available, so you can load your digital pictures and see which frames look the best.  Or if you have a computer, load you pictures at home and leisurely compare the pictures and even send the photos with the different frames to trusted friends and family for their opinion.
  2. You can also shop virtually for flattering frames 24/7, day or night online.  All you need is a computer, and a photo of yourself.  (You don’t need a prescription from your eye doctor until you actually order the eye-glasses.)

If you don’t have a recent photo, you can use your webcam to take a picture.

There are many online eyeglass websites with free virtual try-on capability. The one I found easiest to use is at:  http://www.Globaleyes.com/

Pro and Con of Purchasing Eyeglasses On-Line

    Pro:

Lots of frame choices, colors and shapes.

A typical brick and mortar store can only display a few hundred styles of frames.  An online store can have over 1,000 frames.

You can try the glasses on without leaving home and without a salesperson  standing over you, waiting for you to make a decision.

You can e-mail your try-on eyeglass pictures to friends and family members to get their opinions.

You will save 60% or more on your glasses.

Con:

The jury is still out on how accurate the lenses in these on-line eyeglass stores are.  Also, the online store can’t adjust your glasses if they don’t fit correctly.

What can you do if you find a frame on-line you like, but you are not comfortable buying glasses on-line?

Print a picture of the frame and try to match it at a brick and mortar store.

Or buy only the frame, not the lens on-line, take it to Wal-Mart or another discount brick and mortar shop and get lenses put in the frames. (There will be a small extra charge because you have not purchased the frames at the Brick & Mortar store.)

When I went shopping on-line at Globaleyes, I had a lot of fun virtually trying glasses on.  I saved and printed the photos of me in the eyeglass frames I liked the best.

After lining up my photos side by side, I was able to choose two frames I liked the best, but buying online still seemed too risky to me.

I took the photos shopping with me at a few discount eyeglass stores.  Taking the photos shopping allowed me to easily and instantly spot frames that would look good on me.

I ended up purchasing prescription eyeglasses at Wal-Mart.

My new reading glasses cost me $49, because my vision insurance paid $30.

Which frame do you think I chose?

(Hint: it’s the frame that follows my eye brow shape, and does not overpower my face)

Globaleyeglasses-Alicia--Bronze-46mm-shot-6

 Globaleyeglasses-Tommy-6538-Red-shot-6

Here is a quick review of my previous suggestions.

1.           Get your eyes examined at least once every 2 years

2.         Save time & avoid confusion by using a virtual try-on site.

3.        To save money, purchase from an online site like Globaleyes or if you prefer to buy glasses from a brick and mortar store, consider going Costco or Wal-Mart for discounted prices.

4.        If you do shop at a bricks and mortar store, make sure you get pictures of yourself in the frames before placing an order.  The camera does not lie.  It will let you know if the frames are really flattering.

5.       Choose eye-wear that follows the shape of your eyebrows and does not overpower your face.

Use Color To Create Instant Credibility and Instant Beauty

“My stomach  sticks out, no matter what I put on.

How did I get stuck with this dumpy body?

My waistline has disappeared.

And my breasts are drooping

When I was younger, my body shape wasn’t so bad.

As I have gotten older, everything has gone South.

Will I ever be able to feel good again about the way I look?

What can I do? “

Does this sound like what you say to yourself, when you  look in the mirror?

You can diet and exercise to tone up your body, but it will take some time to see changes.

While you diet and tone up, what else can you do now,  for instant results?

Color Magic

Instead of looking in the mirror and criticizing yourself, you can learn some simple visual tricks using color to redirect the eye away from your problem parts.

You can start to learn to use color, by first learning a new way to look at yourself in the mirror.

Stand at least 5 feet from a full length mirror, with good lighting and use the blink test.

         1.  Blink at yourself

2.  When you open your eyes, notice where your eyes go first. (This is your  focal point, the part that will be seen first and where the eyes will be drawn back to repeatedly.)   Is this where you want people to focus?  If it’s not, you need to bring attention back to your face and eyes.

 3.  You can bring attention to your face and eyes using color.  Because our eyes  automatically search for repeated colors, you can do this by repeating your eye color,    lip color or hair color in your clothing and accessories.

4.    Look at your face and eyes.  Do the colors you are wearing make your eyes sparkle and your shadows and wrinkles look less obvious? If the answer is no, you need to find out what your best colors are.

The Use of Color

The Wrong Way to Use “A POP of Color.”

A recent trend is wearing a pop of color, with shoes or a purse that are a different color than you main outfit.  (This creates a focus on your feet or your purse)

POP of blue color at feet pulls the focus down to the feet.

Do you want people to focus on your feet or your purse?

When they focus on your purse, they are more likely to also notice the size of your hips, or waist since  strapped purses usually stop at the hip or waist area.

When the focus is at your feet, the eyes are drawn to the feet instead of the face.

The Right Way to Use A Pop of Color, To Look More Pulled Together

By repeating your clothing colors an uneven number of times from head to toe, you can look coordinated and visually balanced because the repeated color keeps the eyes of the viewer moving up and down.

Because the eyes are kept moving by the repeated color, when someone looks at you they won’t be focusing on the width of your body or any one specific part.

When used correctly, the flattering repeated colors will keep pulling the viewers eyes back to your face and eyes.

Two Examples

If your hair is brown, by wearing brown shoes that are similar in color to your hair, and repeating the brown at your neckline in a scarf or at your waist with a sash or belt the viewers eyes will go from your brown hair to your brown scarf at your neck to your brown shoes and then up again.

Repetition of brown shoes with brown jacket almost works but needs brown in one more place. Your eye stops at her belt
(By changing the black belt to brown there would be more visual balance.)   Instead of the eyes stopping at the black belt the eye would go from the brown jacket to the brown belt and down to the brown shoes and back up again to the brown belt and jacket.
Black repeated an uneven number of times from head to toe causes your eye to move vertically, creating a visually balanced appearance and even making you appear taller.

It will take a little practice to train your eyes to see what looks unbalanced and what you need to change.

Research has shown that when our eyes look at something that is visually balanced, our brain waves change and we feel good.

Not only will you feel good when you look at yourself, enabling you to be comfortable and confident in any situation, but your visually balanced appearance will be pleasing to others, creating instant visual credibility and instant beauty.

Three Fashion Fads That Waste Your Money

August 22, 2012 by Nancy Goldblatt 2 Comments

Are you trying to look current by buying the latest fashion fads?

Here are three of the  latest fads, I give a thumbs down to because their main purpose is to get you to spend money.

These fads will soon be gone.

Sometimes fads turn into trends that last a few seasons.  Trends can become classics that last forever.  An example of this is denim jeans.  I predict the following fads will never become trends or classics.

  1. Shoes that are a different color than your outfit.  The fashionistas call this “wearing a pop of color.” Do you really want people focusing on your feet instead of your face?
  2. Another large pop of color.  A second fad which is trying to become a trend.  How many of you have purchased a very large purse that is a different color than your outfit (usually in a green or orange color.)
  3. The third fad is the color orange which is everywhere this season.  Orange can work for everyone, but you must know which shades and brightnesses of orange flatter you otherwise you risk looking like a pumpkin if the orange is too bright.
Here is Judith, one of my image clients in a beautiful “toned down orange,” top.  If Judith wore the bright orange being shown this season, it would overpower her gentle coloring.

I would look tired and sick if I tried wearing the toned down orange that Judith looks so fabulous in.

The Halloween orange being shown this season doesn’t flatter many people.  But when you understand the orange shades that flatter you, its easy to look current as well as visually balanced.

 Look Current Without Wasting Money

I am not discouraging you from trying new fads or trends.  Just be selective about what you buy.
I urge you to get educated about what really is flattering for your unique coloring and shape so you don’t end up wasting your  money.
Follow Your Inner Compass
Once you understand some simple rules about looking visually balanced, and you know what colors and silhouettes are flattering, you can begin to follow your inner compass in choosing what looks and feels right on you.

Lipstick, Can’t find Your Favorite Lipstick Color Anymore. Still Searching for that Perfect Color, 3 tips

April 29, 2012 by Nancy Goldblatt 1 Comment

Do you have a favorite lipstick color that was discontinued?  Have you been desperately searching for your favorite color, hoping to find it made by another company.

Or are you are still searching for the perfect lipstick color that will make you eyes sparkle and your lips look luscious?  If you are still trying to figure out what lipstick color works for you, read my post, “Lipstick,How to Choose A Flattering Color.”

Over twenty years ago, before I became an image consultant and knew my best lipstick colors, I wasted too much time and money on lipsticks that did not look good on me.

I was ecstatic after I had my colors done by Color 1 and found 3 different lipstick colors that looked fabulous on me.

I believed I would never have to waste any more time or money searching for those perfect colors.  Then those colors, one by one, were discontinued.

Fortunately, I was able to go to my Color 1 wallet of colors and find other lipstick colors that were perfect for me.

I now have my fingers crossed that my new favorite lipstick colors will not be discontinued.

Here are 3 tips I have come up with to prepare myself in case my current favorite lipstick colors get discontinued.

These tips can help you too.

**********************************************************************

Tip 1: Stock up on your favorite lipstick colors.   I have stocked up on 6 tubes of my favorites and I store them in the refrigerator.

Tip 2: Use a lipstick brush.  By using a retractable lipstick brush, you can use every last drop of lipstick.  You should be able to buy a retractable lip brush at Target or your favorite beauty supply or drug store for a few dollars.

Tip 3: If your favorite color has been discontinued, save a piece and send it to 3 Custom Color Specialists in New York and they will duplicate exactly the color, sheen and texture of your lipstick.  2 tubes costs about $50.  They will duplicate other things also.  I got a shade of eye shadow duplicated and I was pleased with the results.

Here is a link to a few reviews and  more information about 3 Custom Color Specialists.http://www.yelp.com/biz/three-custom-color-specialists-new-york

Are you still looking for your best lipstick colors?

I can now do a color analysis online using digital pictures. You will get a Color 1 chart with 40 to 50 of your best shades including your best lipstick and blush colors.  Contact me for details.
